映画を成立させるための条件とはなにか？アナログフィルムの実験を続け、世界各地の映画祭で作品を発表してきたスペインのルイス・マシアスを迎え、自らスペクトル映画(spectral cinema)と呼ぶ概念を探求する作品上映とエクスパンデッド・シネマ（パフォーマンス）を開催。緻密なコンセプトと高度なテクニックを駆使し、新しい映像表現と知覚を切り開く、刺激的な映像体験をお見逃しなく ！！

Luis Macias | ルイス・マシアス
1976年、スペイン・バルセロナ生まれ。映像作家、イメージ・コンポーザー。映画装置の原理とメディウムの写真化学的性質を通して、映画が持つ形式とスペクトル性を探求する。イメージを実験的かつプロセス重視の手法で探求し、フィルムあるいはビデオによる上映、パフォーマンス、インスタレーションのための作品を制作している。フィルムの独立系現像ラボ「Crater-Lab」の共同創設者であり、実験映画やアナログフォーマットの探求に関する専門的な指導と、自身の作家活動を並行して行う。

これはルイスが自らスペクトル映画(spectral cinema)と呼ぶ概念を探求する、映画作品のプログラムである。そこでは、映画を構成するさまざまな要素が扱われる。プロセスと構造そのものを問い直すこと。制作された、あるいは既存のイメージを、暗室で写真化学的に変容させること。光学プリンターやコンタクトプリンターを通した編集/操作と再撮影。そして、ひとつの出来事としての上映。これらすべてが組み合わさり、閉じた構造を持つ映画的形式の一部をなしている。その構造は、内部に余白を残すことで、即興という行為を誘発し、駆動させる。
イメージそのものの性質や形態と、プロジェクターという機械構造の改変を組み合わせることで、人間の眼が自然のイメージ、あるいは自然が私たちにどう立ち現れるかを探求するための、新たな試みが生まれる。ルイスは、それぞれの作品の形式、構造そのものの中に、プロセスの緻密な組み立てと機械装置の操作を通して分け入っていく。そうすることで、自然に対するスペクトル的な知覚を生み出しているのである。

THE KISS

トーマス・エジソンによる35ミリフィルム『THE KISS』(1896年)を素材に、フィルム、アナログビデオ、デジタルという現存するすべてのフォーマットで構造的に再撮影・再録音し、メディアの進化をなぞるように再構成したプロジェクトである。作品はキスという行為の反復である。短い映像を複製することで、その像は増殖しながら、同時に劣化していく。一つのキスを通して描かれる、フォーマットの進化の歴史。メディアとオーディオヴィジュアル・フォーマットの間にある、親密で美的な関係。

The Analogue Ocean

「海こそが、類推の山へと至る唯一の航路である。波はひとつひとつ砕けては原色へと分かれ、そのたびに新たな知覚への扉が開かれていく……それは、最も高い山へ登るのに匹敵するほど深く、暗く、容易には辿り着けない海だ。その先、第六の太陽が姿を現す頂へ」
「シックス・サン(Sixth Sun)」プロジェクトのための短編映画シリーズ、第一作。プレヒスパニック(スペイン以前のアメリカ大陸)における「第六の太陽」の神話に着想を得ている。この章は、ルネ・ドーマルの著書『類推の山』(Mount Analogue)から着想を受けている。

この作品は、静かにじっと見つめ続けるような、抽象的なまなざしのあり方を提示する。静止しているものが、自分自身に内在する見えない運動の構造を明らかにする場である。私たちが「変わらないもの」として捉えているものと、実際には変化し続けているものとの間に、ある隔たりが生まれる。
静止したまま……私たちは、太陽たちを見つめる。まだ見ぬものは、何か。

「……アイデアは、シネマトグラフという装置を構成する要素を、最小限にまで削ぎ落とすことだ。より少ない要素で作業しながら、そこに深いコントロールを効かせる。完全に黒くなった処理済みのフィルムをわずか2メートルだけ使うという制約は、非常に刺激的だ。私は自分に、上映を成り立たせる要素＝「光、シャッター、フォーカス」だけを使って、一コマ一コマをコントロールすることを課している……」

Program description
Your eyes are spectral machines is a selection of films in which Luis Macias investigates the concept of what he calls spectral cinema. Exploring each of the different components of the film spectrum: the process and structure as a challenge, the photochemical transformation in the laboratory of created and/or appropriate images, editing/manipulation and re-photography through the optical/contact printer, and the projection as an event … These are parts of a filmic form organized in closed structures allowing intermediate spaces that force/activate improvisation.
The properties of the image and its forms and the modification/alteration of the mechanical structure of the projector are combined in new proposals for the exercise of a human eye that explores the images of nature and/or how it is revealed to us.
Luis Macias searches in the form, the structure of each piece, through a detailed elaboration of the process and the manipulation of the mechanical device, causing a spectral perception of Nature.
Artist profile
Luis Macias (1976, Barcelona, Spain.) Is an artist, filmmaker and image composer. His pieces deal with the formal and spectral properties of the moving image, through the exploration of the cinematographic device itself and the photochemical nature of the medium. Focused on experimental and procedural practices of analog image, his works in Super 8,16mm, 35mm and / or video format are composed for projection, performance or installation. His films and pieces of expanded cinema have been shown in prestigious film, art and music festivals as well as art centers, museums and alternative spaces around the world.
He’s been part of collective exhibitions and has had one individual so far. Also he has collaborated with various artists, musicians and filmmakers in the creation of collective works. Co-founder and an active member of Crater-Lab, an independent laboratory for analog cinema, and alternates his art work with specialized teaching in experimental cinema and the exploration of analog formats.

THE KISS

Based on the film THE KISS (T. Edison 1896) in its original 35mm format, this video-film project is based on a structural re-shooting and re-recording of the original film in all the existing formats: analog, electronic and digital, in an evolutive form.
The film is a reiteration of the act of kissing. The emphasis on the kiss, repeated and multiplied, while deteriorated in it’s own progress.
The history of the evolution of formats through a kiss. An intimate and aesthetic relationship between media and audiovisual formats.

The Analogue Ocean

First piece of the short film series for the Sixth Sun project. Inspired by the pre-hispanic myth of the Sixth Sun.
This chapter is inspired by the René Daumal book “Mount Analogue”

Is not the sun who is moving it proposes an abstract contemplation, where the immobile reveals its own invisible choreography. A dissonance arises between the illusion of what we perceive as constant and what is really changing.

“…the idea is to reduce to the minimum the elements that form the cinematograph device. To work with less elements but having a deep control over it. The limitation of using only 2 meters of processed film stock that becomes totally black is highly stimulating.
