Purpose and Outline
Center is an artist-run space with hostel in Kanuma, Tochigi, Japan. It aims to be a place for artistic expression outside of established genres, centred on experimental film and music, and a unique place in the world where a new culture can be fostered. By working and creating within environment of Center, this residency program aims to deepen artists’ modes of expression and ways of thinking, thereby opening up new possibilities for artistic creation. In addition, we hope that participating artists will discover new regional attractions from an external perspective. The program also seeks to foster sustainable and alternative networks, enabling people and communities from around the world to meet and connect organically.
Advantages
・Support for projects from the artist’s point of view and providing information (available in Japanese and English).
・A town with a long history as a post town and woodworking, with lots of materials for creation and research.
・About 70% of the area of Kanuma is forest and nature, and there are hot springs to refresh your stay.
・Accommodation floors are new, clean, and quiet, you can concentrate on your work.
・Conveniently located 1.5 hour by direct express train from Tokyo (Asakusa) and about 30 min by train to the World Heritage Site of Nikko.
Who can apply?
・Artists and researchers in art, music, moving image, design and crafts, etc.
・People who can communicate in English or Japanese.
・It is possible to stay with more than one person, e.g. with a partner or in a collective.
・Families with children are welcome.
・Please contact us for more than 10 people.
Participation fee
We do not offer any financial support such as transport, production or meals.
If you need an invitation letter for a grant application, we can prepare it for you.

Notes
・There is a review process for residency.
・New works are not mandatory.
・During the stay, please hold an event once such as an exhibition/ screening/ performance/ workshop/ talk.
・The accommodation is open as a hostel and may be shared with other guests.
・Center is a family-run business, so depending on the date and time, there may be small children.
・The studio is a former garage, so it is cold in winter and hot in summer.
・Please be aware that staff will take photos for documentation. These photos will be shared.
・No smoking throughout the building.

Basic info about Kanuma
Population: 90,000, area: 490㎡
Center is located in the old town, with restaurants, supermarkets, convenience stores, libraries, etc. within walking distance.
Slightly cooler than Tokyo throughout the year.
July-September is hot and thunderstorms are common; December-February is cold. Snowfall is rare in the city.

Tips for research
・A post town where the officers travelled from the Imperial Court to Nikko Toshogu Shrine, where Shougun Ieyasu was enshrined.
・The origins of the old town centred on Imamiya Shrine and the Autumn Festival (artistry of sculpture stalls and musical performances).
・Many streams and rivers flow into the city from the mountains in the north-west.
・Summer is one of the most thunderous in the country due to the Nikko Mountains.
・The Mae Nikko area in the north-west (1,300 m altitude) has wetlands and pastures where about 400 plant species grow wild.
・Stones unique to the region can be found.
・Kanuma has a thriving forestry and woodworking. Kumiko, with its geometric patterns, is particularly well-known.
・Awano area is the No. 1 production area of hemp in Japan, which is used for Shinto rituals and other processed products.
・Native buckwheat and konjac potatoes are produced here. Strawberries and chives are widely produced.
・Covered waterways run through the city.
・Many atmospheric old houses and buildings remain.
Center AiRについて
Centerは栃木県鹿沼市にある、アーティストが運営する宿泊可能な複合施設です。実験映画・実験音楽を軸に既存のジャンルからはみ出した表現活動の場、そして新たな文化が醸成される世界で唯一無二の場所を目指しています。
Centerという環境に身を置き制作を行うことで、アーティスト自身が表現や思考を深め、新たな創造の可能性を切り拓くこと、同時に外からの視点で地域の新たな魅力を発掘してもらうことを目的に滞在制作（Center AiR／センターエアー）を実施します。
その過程で、国内外の様々な人や地域が有機的に交わり、持続可能でオルタナティブなネットワークがつながっていくことも期待します。

鹿沼の基本情報
人口約9万人, 面積490.64㎡
Centerは旧市街地にあり、徒歩圏内に飲食店・スーパー・コンビニ・直売所・図書館等有
年間通じて東京都心よりやや気温が低い。
7-9月は暑く、雷が多い。12-2月は非常に寒いが、市街地は雪が積もることは少ない。
制作のヒント
・朝廷から徳川家康がまつられた日光東照宮まで例幣使が行き来した街道の宿場町
・今宮神社を氏神とする旧市街地の成り立ちと秋まつり（彫刻屋台の芸術性とお囃子）
・西北部の山々を水源とした多くの沢や川が市内中心部へ流れ込んでいる
・日光連山などの影響から夏は全国でも有数の雷の多さ
・前日光エリア（標高1300m）には約400種の植物が自生する湿原や牧場がある
・深岩石、大谷石、鹿沼土などこの地域特有の石が取れる
・豊かな森林を活かした林業と木工が盛ん。特に幾何学模様の組子は世界的にも有名
・粟野地区は全国1位の大麻生産地、神事をはじめ、和紙や炭などの加工品に使われる
・鹿沼在来種のソバやこんにゃくイモ、イチゴやニラの生産が盛ん
・蓋をされた用水路（暗渠＝あんきょ）が街中を流れている
・趣のある古い住居や建物が沢山残っている

Activities during AiR
Basic research around Center and Kumiko(Japanese geometric woodwork), made some pieces for new performance with Kumiko pattern, film animation workshop, screening and performance.
Lynn Loo is originally from Singapore and currently based in London. Loo made a transition from a background in music to filmmaking in 1997. She studied film and video at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and film archiving at University of East Anglia.
Loo’s films have been included in numerous international festivals and gallery exhibitions. They are in the collection of Asian Film Archive in Singapore and He Xiangning Art Museum in China.
シンガポール出身。実験映画作家/映画フィルム保存専門家。
1997年に初めて映画を撮り、音楽教師から映画制作へ転身。シカゴ美術館附属美術大学で映画製作を学び、これまでに8ミリ、16ミリ、ビデオ作品を制作。言葉のないある種の物語を作る為、映像と音のダイナミズムを探求する。

Jordan is a multifaceted visual artist based in Naarm/Melbourne.
His artistic practice is an experimental mergence of analog film, sculpture, poetry, installation and performance. His artworks are informed by his poetic response to the human encounter of our world, seeded by a desire to unveil threads to the fabric of his personal experience. He realises works that are technically complex, driven by pure compulsion, that vibrate and encourage immersion in deep reflection.
ジョーダン・ジェームズ・ケイは、ナーム（メルボルン）を拠点に活動する多才なビジュアル・アーティストであり、アナログフィルム、彫刻、詩、インスタレーション、パフォーマンスの実験的な融合を試みている。彼の作品は、世界での人との出会いに対する詩情豊かな反応に基づくものであり、個人的な経験の因果がどのようにしてつながったかを解き明かしたいという願望によってもたらされている。また純粋な衝動に駆られながら、技術的に複雑で、深い考察への没入を促す作品を創り出す。

Basic research around Center, made mixed media works using materials found around the area , mini workshop and tea party with local people.
I am interested in the places where people come together with a common purpose and cooperate with each other in the community. I am creating artworks that resonate with the intersection of the memories inscribed in the places and the individual memories of each viewers who visit the places.
In May 2021, I started operating Art Center Derahajiri in Fujiidera city, Osaka prefecture, in addition to creating artworks. I am actively introducing artists to the Hajinosato area community, providing networking opportunities and collaboration with local people.
共通の目的や地域などによって結びついた人々が集まる場に関心がある。そうした場に刻まれた記憶と、訪れる鑑賞者それぞれが持つ個々の記憶が交差し共鳴する作品を展開している。
また、2021年5月から制作の傍ら、大阪府藤井寺市にてアートセンター デラハジリの運営を開始。土師ノ里エリアコミュニティに積極的にアーティストを紹介し、ネットワークづくりや、地域の人々と協働できる機会を提供している。

Catherine Ostraya is an artist based in The Hague, Netherlands. Her upbringing spanned across many places, but she was born In Moscow, Russia. Currently her work addresses the themes of dissemination and passing which is embodied in her work with mycelium. Much of her work ranges between performance and video, where she uses herself as a catalyst for explorations in time perception, memory and identity. She believes that the most important role of the artist is to be receptive to the less visible undercurrents of life, which she attempts to tap into using curiosity and honesty as her compass.
オランダのハーグを拠点に活動するアーティスト。彼女の生い立ちは様々な場所にまたがっているが、生まれはロシアのモスクワ。彼女の作品は、菌糸を使った作品に象徴されるように、拡散と伝達をテーマにしている。彼女の作品の多くは、パフォーマンスとビデオの中間に位置し、時間、記憶、アイデンティティの探求の触媒として自分自身を用いている。アーティストの最も重要な役割は、目に見えない人生の底流を受容することであると信じており、好奇心と素直さを制作の指針としている。

Basic research around Center and Art Class for People with Disabilities. Made some paintings and had a small exhibition.
Jonas Raps (1992) graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (NL) in 2015. After a period of making large scale canvases and wall paintings, his practice has increasingly focused on social engagment. His projects include creating a giant snail sculpture at a local refugee centre that displays paintings by resident children on its shell, and leading a collaborative artwork together with residents of a grey apartment building to decorate their entrance hall. Currently he is co-hosting a series of creative team-building workshops, challenging groups of elderly people in various retirement homes to explore their creativity.
1992年生まれ、2015年にハーグ王立芸術アカデミー（オランダ）を卒業。大規模なキャンバスや壁画を制作した後、社会との関わりを重視するようになる。彼のプロジェクトには、地元の難民センターに巨大なカタツムリの彫刻を制作し、その殻に住民の子どもたちが描いた絵を展示するものや、アパートの住民と一緒にエントランスホールを飾る共同作品を制作するものなど。現在は老人ホームの高齢者グループとクリエイティブなチームビルディングを探求するワークショップを共同主催している。

Basic research around Center, Field recording, Live performance.
Sound artist, composer, and diy electronic instrument maker based in Adelaide, Australia. His main focus centres around close human connection, and reframing non-human audio sources as having musical intention. His diy instruments vary widely in construction and purpose, oftentimes utilising biometric and ecological data to allow for sources outside of his control to contribute to the sound, or working with multi-person monophonic designs.
オーストラリアのアデレードを拠点に活動するサウンド・アーティスト、作曲家、電子楽器製作者。彼の主な関心は、人間同士の密接なつながりと、非人工的な音源に音楽的な意図を持たせることである。彼のDIY楽器は、その構造も目的もさまざまで、しばしば生体情報や生態学的データを利用して、彼がコントロールしない音を活かしたり、複数人用のモノフォニック・デザインに取り組んだりしている。

Claire Mosley is a watercolour artist, natural dyer and environmental educator based on Wurundjeri Country in Naarm (Melbourne, Australia).
Her practice started while living on Gunai/Kurnai Country as an outdoor educator. She began painting her surroundings as a way to learn about where she was, including the flora and fauna, skies and waterways.
Time outdoors has been shaping her teaching and artmaking practices ever since. You’ll find her on foot or by bike with her journals, pens, pastels and paints all across urban Naarm, Victoria and beyond. Her freehand watercolour works reflect back the beauty and aliveness of nature and encourage people of all ages to open their senses and connect with the ecosystems and communities around them.
Claire has a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Teaching from Monash University. As well as adorning her products, Claire also produces watercolour commissions for individuals, community organisations and events.
オーストラリアの水彩画家／染色家／環境教育者で、先住民アボリジニーのウルンジェリ族の居住区域を拠点とする。彼女の活動は野外教育者としてグナイ／クルナイに住んでいたときに始まった。動植物、空、水路など、自分がいる場所を知るための方法として、周囲の環境を描き始めた。
以来、野外での時間が彼女の教育や作品制作の実践を形作ってきた。日記、ペン、パステル、絵の具を携えて、徒歩や自転車でビクトリア州ナーム市やその近郊を旅している。彼女のフリーハンドの水彩画作品は、自然の美しさと生命力を映し出し、あらゆる年齢層の人々に、自分の感覚を開き、周囲の生態系やコミュニティとつながることを促している。
クレアはモナシュ大学でビジュアル・アートと教職の学士号を取得しており、製作物を飾るだけではなく、個人、コミュニティ組織、イベントなどのために水彩画の依頼も受けている。

He is a sound artist and composer based in Vienna, Austria. Sound is the main focus of Nahold’s work, whether as part of audio-visual installations, multi-channel compositions or the standard stereo album format. He has composed scores for film, theater, dance and performances, working with artists such as God’s Entertainment, Daniela Georgieva, Akemi Takeya, Lara Ostan, Maximilian Schwidlinski, Yein Lee, Simon Mayer, Anna Bergmann, Peter Kutin and Antoinette Zwirchmayr. Digital alienation, nostalgia, sonic hybrids and spatial acoustic environments are recurring themes in his work, exploring constant reconfigurations of existing aesthetics in often oxymoronic couplings.
ウィーンを拠点とするサウンドアーティスト／作曲家。ナホルトの作品は、オーディオビジュアル・インスタレーション、マルチチャンネルでの作曲、アルバムのリリース、あらゆる形態で音に焦点を当てている。映画、演劇、ダンス、パフォーマンスのためのスコアを作曲し、多くのアーティストとも協働。
デジタル化されたものへの異和感、懐かしさ、音響の混成、空間的な音響環境は彼の作品に繰り返し登場するテーマであり、その矛盾した組み合わせで既存の美学を再構成することを絶えず探求している。

Basic research around Center and culvert, field recording, sound exhibition, talk and rooftop live performance.
Sound Artist, Accordion, Accordina and multi-percussion player, Songwriter. He won the 3rd Prize at 2nd JILA Percussion competition, the Espoir Prize at the 21st OSAKA international music competition with the accordion, joined Asian youth orchestra.
In addition to performing acoustic music such as folk music and gypsy jazz based on classical music interpretations, his activities span a wide range of activities, including performances centered on digital equipment.
東京在住のサウンドアーティスト、アコーディオン・アコーディナ・打楽器奏者、ソングライター。京都大学文学部卒業。第21回大阪国際音楽コンクール民族楽器部門にてアコーディナでエスポアール賞受賞のほか、第2回JILA打楽器コンクール3位入賞、Asian Youth Orchestra参加。その他、hoshioto2022や静岡大道芸フェスティバル2023など様々なフェスに参加。
クラシック音楽的な解釈と打楽器的なグルーブを土台に、民族音楽やジプシージャズなどアコースティックな演奏のほか、デジタル機器や環境音、サンプリング音などを駆使した表現も精力的に行っている。
