アメリカでのフィルムを用いた実験映画製作・教育の重要な拠点であるNYの非営利団体ラボ「MONO NO AWARE」から創立者のSteve Cossmanと作家のLily Jue Shengが来日し、Centerにて団体の歴史を振り返るレクチャーと日本未公開の実験映画を上映する。
MONO NO AWARE is a non-profit organization in NYC, an important base for experimental film production and education using film in the US. Steve Cossman(founder) and artist Lily Jue Sheng will visit Center in Japan. Let’s enjoy the history of MONO NO AWARE and screening of experimental films that have not been shown in Japan.
MONO NO AWARE
MNAは2007年に設立された、映画体験を通じて人と人をつなぐことを使命とする非営利のシネマアート団体です。 パフォーマンス、彫刻、インスタレーション、拡張映画の一部として、ライブフィルムプロジェクションや光の変容を取り入れた現代アーティストの作品を展示するフェスティバルを隔年で開催しています。
2022年12月に行われた16回目の記念プログラムでは、4つの委嘱作品の初公開を含め、50人以上の国際的なアーティストの作品を紹介しました。 2009年には映画制作ワークショップシリーズを立ち上げ、地元では年間800人の参加者を教育し、さらに国内外の1000人へのアウトリーチプログラムに成長しました。継続的な活動を支援するため、同団体は割引料金の機材レンタルを提供し、フィルムストックの輸入／販売もしています。 また、「Connectivity Through Cinema」と「Open Air」と題した、現代映像作家の作品を紹介する2つの個人向け上映シリーズをキュレーションしています。Kodak、MoMA、Thomas Edison National Historical Parkなどの地元施設とも長期的な関係を築いています。
2014年には、ダラスにあるフィルムラボから現像機材を譲り受け、アーティスト、アーキビスト、映画制作者に特化した国内初のフルサービスの非営利映画ラボの構築を開始しました。

MONO NO AWAREの創設者兼エグゼクティブ・ディレクターであり、映像作家。彼の最初のフィルム作品「TUSSLEMUSCLE」は、コダック社のContinued Excellence in Filmmaking賞を獲得している。トロントのLiaison of Independent Filmmakersで滞在制作、 ブラウン大学、ダートマス大学、イェール大学などで客員講師を務め、ブルックリン・マガジンでは「ブルックリン文化に最も影響を与えた人物トップ100」の1人に選ばれている。 2022年のホイットニー・ビエンナーレで初公開されたイト・バラダの16mm長編映画「A Day Is A Day」では、2チャンネルのループ・インスタレーションとして撮影監督を務めた。
Lily Jue Sheng / リリー・シェン
Lily Jue Shengは、NYを拠点とし、映像とコラージュを中心に作品制作をするアーティストである。近年、ロッテルダム国際映画祭、北京国際短編映画祭、25 FPS Festivalでの上映、ジェローム財団のフェローシップ、アンダーソン・センターとNARS財団のレジデンスを受けた。今回、日本で初上映となる。

Mono No Aware
MNA (est. 2007) is a non-profit cinema-arts organization whose mission is connectivity through the cinematic experience. MONO NO AWARE presents a bi-annual cinema-arts festival exhibiting the work of contemporary artists that incorporate live film projections and altered light as part of a performance, sculpture or installation (Expanded Cinema). The 16th anniversary program took place in December of 2022 and presented the work of over 50 international artists including the premiere of 4 commissioned works. In 2009 MNA established a series of peer to peer filmmaking workshops that has grown to educate 800 participants a year locally with an outreach program to another 1000 inter/nationally. In support of continued practice, the organization maintains a reduced rate equipment rentals program and imports / distributes a variety of film stocks out of their Brooklyn home office. Through the organization, Cossman curates two in-person screening series entitled Connectivity Through Cinema & Open Air presenting the work of contemporary moving image artists. Operating in the fields of education, production and exhibition, has allowed him to establish long-term relationships with industry leaders like FotoKem, Technicolor, Kodak, and local institutions including the MoMA and the Thomas Edison National Historical Park. In 2014, MNA expanded the wet-lab facilities and begin building the nation’s first full-service non-profit motion picture laboratory dedicated to artists, archivists and filmmakers.
Steve Cossman
Steve Cossman is Founder and Executive Director of Mono No Aware (est. 2007).
His first major work on film, TUSSLEMUSCLE, earned him Kodak’s Continued Excellence in Filmmaking award. He has completed residencies at MoMA PS1 as part of Expo 1, at the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto and Brooklyn Magazine named Cossman one of the ‘Top 100 most Influential persons of Brooklyn Culture.’ He has been a visiting lecturer at Brown University, Dartmouth, Yale, SAIC, the University of Pennsylvania, Duke, The Beijing Film Academy, and many others. His second work on film, W H I T E C A B B A G E, a collaboration with Jahiliyya Fields of L.I.E.S. Records, had its U.S. premiere at Anthology Film Archives. His film RELAY, an experimental form documentary shot in Japan with the musician Ei Wada had its premiere at JAPAN CUTS at the Japan Society of New York. As a cinematographer and film technician he has collaborated and supported the work of Leslie Thornton, Cynthia Madansky, Rosa Barba, and Yto Barrada. Steve was cinematographer for Yto Barrada’s 16mm feature film ‘A Day Is A Day’ which premiered at The 2022 Whitney Biennial as a dual-channel looping installation.
Lily Jue Sheng
Lily Jue Sheng is an artist/filmmaker whose work concentrates on moving image and collage forms. Their recent screenings include: International Film Festival Rotterdam, Beijing International Short Film Festival, True/False Film Festival, 25 FPS Festival, RIDM Montreal International Documentary Festival, and Winnipeg Underground Festival. Their recent exhibitions, performances, and online works include: seen only, heard only through someone else’s description at McEvoy Foundation for the Arts, Doc 008: Interlude Docs, Open Air Screening Series at Mono No Aware, and Five Movements at The Poetry Project. They received a Jerome Foundation Artist Fellowship and residencies at the Anderson Center and NARS Foundation.
